Steve Noggle

Steve Noggle - Morganton, NC

Steve Noggle lives in Burke County in the mountains of Western North Carolina. He began working with wood at the age of nine when he built a doghouse with his father.

For over twenty years, Steve has worked as a frame carpenter, forester, and most recently in the furniture industry. Over those years he has also built furniture, cabinets, and small items such as mirrors, bookends, and planters for friends, family and customers. His workshop is housed in a Depression-era clapboard ‘store’ building from which his family sold their produce in the 30s and 40s.

I began working with a lathe in recent years and uncovered an overwhelming passion for turning wood. Our woods are filled with oaks, cherries, sycamores, poplars, hickories, and maples that provide both inspiration and lovely materials to work.

My pieces begin with the possibilities that are there in the wood itself, and then take shape as the lathe spins and the tool finds the flowing line. I find that pairing woods of different colors is an exciting way to show both woods at their best.

The hours of sanding, oiling, and buffing are worth it when touching a piece elicits an ‘ahhh.’
