Pamela Haddock - Sylva, NC
Pam Haddock's work is often described as spiritual, as she strives to forge an emotional connection with her subjects and infuse that connection into her art. Her deep appreciation for the mountains, the shifting light throughout the day, and the movement of clouds is evident in her work. She is captivated by rocks, water, trees, and the landscapes they form. By drawing inspiration from actual locations and the visualization of places enhanced by memory, she creates her scenes using a print brayer on plate surface substrates.
Pam enjoys the unpredictability of her process, which requires her to physically engage with the medium. This unique interaction results in surprising outcomes. She layers watercolor pigments with a brayer to direct light, then sprays with water and lifts to reveal deeper layers. Using single-edge razor blades, palette knives, and chisel-end brushes, she pushes, scratches, and scrapes shapes into the paint, creating impressions of dappled light, dust motes, and fireflies amidst rock-strewn landscapes. The paint retains its intensity because it lies on the surface rather than being absorbed into the substrate. Once completed, her paintings are sealed with a UV/UVA acrylic sealant to enhance color intensity.
Pam has not abandoned traditional watercolor techniques and continues to paint using the wet-on-wet technique on 140 lb. cold press watercolor paper, a reliable and beloved method she frequently revisits.
