Julie Calhoun-Roepnack

Having been an artist from my earliest childhood, drawing and painting at every available opportunity, I moved into 3-dimensional media, working primarily in clay, at about the age of twelve. The breathtaking Rocky Mountains, just a short distance away from my hometown in beautiful Colorado, were always a source of great artistic inspiration to me. In addition, the wide variety of colors and textures exhibited by nature through the course of 4 distinctive seasons had always fascinated me. This appreciation for variety has made its way into the work which I produce today, as in my work I employ methods which combine wheel throwing or hand-building with coil, pinch and slab.

Here in Asheville I find once again that simply walking outside is an exhilarating source of creative inspiration. Brightly colored glazes and innovative techniques using scraffito, carving, and impressions characterize my signature works. While most of my pieces are functional, they bridge the gap between fine art and craft, and are purchased more often than not for their design and decorative appeal.
