Jo Miller

Jo Miller - Candler, NC

Jo Miller has long been captivated by the allure of wood, drawn to the intricate craftsmanship showcased in turned wood at craft shows. Her journey into woodturning began in the summer of 2016 when she attended her first wood turning class, igniting a passion for the craft. Shortly thereafter, Jo joined the Carolina Mountain Woodturners group in Asheville, where she immersed herself in a wealth of learning opportunities.

Through the group's monthly demonstrations, classes, and retreats, Jo was introduced to a diverse range of woodturning techniques, including turned bowls, boxes, platters, pens, pendants, off-centered turning, embellishing, and carving. In 2018, she had the opportunity to expand her skills further by studying Basket Illusion under the guidance of renowned woodturner Harvey Meyer. This technique, which combines elements of woodturning, design, and embellishment, has since become a primary focus of Jo's work.

Eager to continue her artistic growth, Jo actively seeks out new techniques and methods to enhance her creations. She recently delved into relief carving through a class with Sammy Long, exploring ways to incorporate color and texture into her work. Drawing inspiration from nature's organic forms, as well as from diverse media such as pottery, baskets, and quilt designs, Jo's creative process is driven by a deep appreciation for the beauty and character of wood.

Residing in an area rich with creative history, Jo feels fortunate to be part of a community that nurtures and celebrates artistic expression.
