Jack Stern lives and works in Jackson County in the mountains of North Carolina where his interests lie in capturing the natural beauty of his rural surroundings in oils, watercolors, and acrylics.
Originally from Colorado, Jack recalls
“My Grandmother, Ruth Stern, started me with oil painting when I was fourteen years old.” That same year Jack undertook classes with the skilled William Steinbach, in San Diego, California.
Other than study with Steinbach, Jack is primarily self-taught, learning extensively from painting experiences with other painters on location. These location-painting jaunts took him throughout the western states as well as Massachusetts, Alberta, British Columbia, Mexico and North Carolina. Often these trips were in back country on burros and alone up to twenty-four days at a time. As in his youth, he built an understanding of the variety and beauty of the vast landscapes and seascapes that he came in contact with.
